Ojisuns
(Middle-aged men)

Project Outlines

The SUN Ideas Contest, an online event for employees, was held in 2021.

Any employee can participate, and teams or individuals can challenge themselves. Like a business competition, the ideas will be judged on the basis of application and presentation, and the chosen idea will be awarded a cash prize. The theme was "Ideas to update the company”.

The team "Ojisuns" were established at this event. The members are employees who have worked as system engineers and in sales for a number of years. Their ideas were successful in winning prizes. After the contest, the Ojisuns continued to work with other members to carry out their ideas. Then, "SUNPO," a new communication tool like a social networking service, was born.

The community site "SUNPO" is a new internal communication tool developed by the team “Ojisuns” using Bubble. Employees can quickly start their sub-communities, and interested employees gather to share photos and comments. Popular topics are related to food, photos, and sports. The more than 120 employees across the country enjoy chatting and interacting casually with each other regardless of their work location, department, or position.

Tell us how team "Ojisuns" began

Question
SATOSHI's Answer

SATOSHI

When planning the project, all three of us shared the desire to create connections with employees beyond our locations. Members of the same age group with the same willingness came together, and the team “Ojisuns” was born.

SHIGE's Answer

SHIGE

SUN has offices throughout Japan or overseas, but because we complete individual projects at each office, there are few opportunities to interact with employees who are located far away. Since we work for the same company, strengthening employee relationships would be a good idea.

MASA's Answer

MASA

Because of the closed organisational environment and the pandemic, offline multi-location exchanges were difficult to spread. I wanted to participate in the contest and show the department members how to carry out projects with employees from other locations.

TOSHI's Answer

TOSHI

I joined the project after the release of the "SUNPO". I have been actively using the SUNPO to talk with employees at other locations. When I discovered that MASA was working alone to fix a bug, I asked him if I could help and got involved in the project.

How did the idea for "SUNPO" come about?

Question
SHIGE's Answer

SHIGE

I remember what SATOSHI said at the first project meeting: "I wonder what I could do to support the corporate philosophy of 'connecting people with people”. I have worked with many people throughout my career at this company, and I wonder what I have been able to do for the company's philosophy.

SATOSHI's Answer

SATOSHI

From there, we came up with the idea of a communication tool like a social networking service as a way to connect employees across locations. We further explored the concept in depth using these conditions, "incorporate current trends", "take on new challenges", and "use the Bubble that I learned in the No-Code training program. The "SUNPO" was then born, incorporating the ideas of the online community, PoiKatsu (collecting rewards points), and Metaverse.

MASA's Answer

MASA

I wanted to create something that would show the "personality" of each employee. I wanted to make a tool that allows employees to post their thoughts and feelings casually and connect through these activities. I connected people through the careers and skills that I have built up.

Their motivation is, "Let's do something fun!”

Question
SHIGE's Answer

SHIGE

We are also motivated by "for the company, for the employees", but we also decide to do something fun because we have to make time to get together even though we are busy with work. We can see what is happening at other locations through conversations with the members.

TOSHI's Answer

TOSHI

Now, "Ojisuns" is where we can casually converse with employees from multiple locations. The members fit well, and we don't say many negative things about each other. We are looking forward to the goal and leave many positive comments. Something innovative is about to happen, and that motivates me.

MASA's Answer

MASA

It is nice to have a place to get together with friends who share the same interests. If all I do is work, my thinking inevitably becomes rigid. It would be nice if we could create such a "place" for us and other employees. SUNPO, the communication tool we have made, will become that place.

What is the future of the team “Ojisuns”?

Question
SATOSHI's Answer

SATOSHI

Each member of Ojisuns has a different goal. Some want to grow "SUNPO" and commercialise it by selling it as a new service, some want to use it to educate their departments, some want to develop it into a tool to visualise internal projects, and some want to use it as a place to test the latest technology.

MASA's Answer

MASA

The destination differs from person to person, but each of us has these goals for the future, which keeps us motivated and proactive in our activities. The project is successfully on track because the members have gained experience in their careers, both technically and as people.

SHIGE's Answer

SHIGE

It would have been challenging to do the same activities I am doing now when I was younger and in my 20s. I think the next "thing I can do" is to expand this project to the younger generation. It is the subsequent role of the Ojisuns (middle-aged men).

TOSHI's Answer

TOSHI

I would be happy to see more small communities created among employees who get to know each other through SUNPO. SUNPO will inspire younger employees.
