SUN opens its first overseas branch in Bangladesh Creating local jobs and helping solve Japan’s IT human resource shortage
SUN Co., Ltd. (Headoffice: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Shumpei Nakasone), has opened a branch office in Dhaka, the capital of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. This is SUN’s first overseas branch.
【Reasons for deciding to open in Bangladesh】
１．Win-win for Japan and Bangladesh
With the acceleration of digitalization in Japan, all industries are facing the challenge of a shortage of IT human resources. According to the Information Technology Promotion Agency (IPA) “IT Human Resources White Paper 2020”, there will be a shortage of up to 790,000 IT human resources in 2030. It is easy to imagine that “DX promotion” and “digitalization” will continue to be keywords that attract attention in the future. Securing advanced IT human resources will undoubtedly become a business challenge for IT companies and other industries as well.
Bangladesh, on the other hand, is in the midst of economic growth, and as its people have become more affluent, the quality of their education has improved and many of them have university degrees. However, the country faces the challenge of a lack of attractive job opportunities due to salary and employment instability.
SUN has been recruiting IT professionals in Bangladesh since its establishment, and more than 10 employees from Bangladesh have been able to start working immediately after joining the Tokyo head office. We believe that by setting up a branch office in Bangladesh, SUN will be able to employ local IT personnel on a larger-scale and contribute to solving the problems of both Japan’s IT human resource shortage and Bangladesh’s employment shortage.
２．For the Future of Bangladesh’s Youth – SDGs Initiatives
SUN launched its own Japanese language learning app, “KURASHI STUDY”, in Bangladesh in June 2021. Bangladesh ranked 30th with 4,800 Japanese language learners, according to the ranking of the number of Japanese language learners in each country released by the Japan Foundation (2018), an independent administrative agency under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. However, the number of downloads of the “KURASHI STUDY” app in Bangladesh exceeded 14,000, far surpassing India’s ranking of 11th in terms of Japanese language learners. As seen from the app download figures and JICA’s B-JET project (a local ICT human resource development project targeting the Japanese market), it is expected that there are many young people in Bangladesh, a country known for being friendly to Japan, who dream of working for a Japanese company.
Based on the above, we believe that we can contribute to the SDGs “1. End Poverty” and “8. Job Satisfaction and Economic Growth” and support the future of the youth of Bangladesh. To this end, we have decided to open a branch office in Bangladesh.

SUN is proposing to use the Japanese language learning app “KURASHI STUDY” as a digital teaching tool. Promoting the use of ICT in Japanese language education to people and organizations involved in Japanese language education, such as Japanese language schools and institutions that send out technical interns. At the same time, putting more effort into local hiring activities to increase the number of hired engineers, while developing an organizational structure for the development team to grow as an offshore development base. Hoping to create new innovations and grow into a globally competitive engineering force, by having engineers from Japan and Bangladesh develop together.

■Japanese language learning app “KURASHI STUDY”

KURASHI STUDY is a Japanese language learning app that teaches Japanese grammar, expressions, vocabulary, pronunciation, etc. through the conversations of the characters based on a total of 96 stories about life in Japan.
