Kyoto City International Foundation Partners with SUN. Encouraging foreign workers to take online Japanese language lessons.

SUN has partnered with the Kyoto City International Foundation to promote “kokoka Online Nihongo,” Japanese language lessons for foreign workers offered by the Foundation.

■Comments from Kyoto City International Foundation
As a result of globalization, it is increasing in importance for Japanese companies to recruit human resources from overseas. Along with the expansion of hiring foreign human resources in Japan, the need to improve the Japanese language skills of foreign employees is increasing. The Law on the Advancement of Japanese Language Education, enforced in 2019, states that companies are responsible for showing efforts to provide Japanese language learning opportunities to their employed foreign employees.

Kyoto City also established the “International City Vision of Kyoto” (March 2021) in order to achieve its vision of an international city. The initiative titled “A city that promotes the incorporation of diversity, and enriches the lives of its citizens” mentions “Create systems for international residents to live safely and with peace of mind” and “Communication support including enhancement of Japanese language education” as directives for the initiative. Showing efforts to provide equal opportunities for Japanese language education to foreign residents is necessary to overcome differences in language, culture, and lifestyle, and to build a society that accepts and respects different values.

Accordingly, the Kyoto City International Foundation has launched an online Nihongo class available to companies and organizations. Experienced Japanese language tutors will deliver courses to improve their Japanese language skills. Smooth communication with foreign employees leads to more efficient work and the recruitment of skilled workers. We hope they will consider taking advantage of our Japanese language study program for people who live and work as residents.
